NOTES:
Catlinite commonly known as
"pipe-stone," was treasured by American Indians and was extensively
used for pipe-bowls. In color it ranges from a deep red to an ashy
tint; the main quarry is situated some three hundred miles west of
the Falls of St. Anthony, on the dividing
ridge between the Saint Peter's and Missouri rivers. Used in
ceremonies and as the proverbial “peace pipe” catlinite pipes have a
degree of spiritual significance and should be treated with respect.
P&T Magazine also praises the smoking characteristics of the stone.
We
acquired the new bowl as a singular item and without altering the
catlinite have fashioned an acrylic stem to fit. The stem is a tad
loose and should the buyer decide to smoke rather than display the
pipe we recommend that the stem be fixed into the shank with epoxy.
